Are you self-published? What is Pitstone Publishing?
Yes, I am. Pitstone Publishing is a pseudonym publisher. I may create a business under this name that owns all of my self-published books.
So, I guess the burning question is, how is book 2 coming along?
I have finished book 2! It currently stands at 174k, and is with my editor. I hope to get it back October 2024. I need a few months with it, and hope to publish January 2025.
How many books are planned in the series?
As it stands, I have plans for 5 books in the series. But may write more, if it’s received well.
I wrote book 3 in lockdown and it’s ready for a copy-edit at the end of 2024, to publish late spring 2025.
Also, book five is complete too! I decided to write the end story, and it’s quite a surprise!
What’s involved in the process?
First and foremost, I integrate my writing into my photography career, which remains my primary passion. However, when I'm immersed in a planned story, I can consistently churn out 5000 words per week. It's astonishing how time materialises when one engages in something they love.
Typically, I outline the narrative in collaboration with my friend Chris Knapman, who also serves as the cover artist and map illustrator. Once the manuscript is prepared, it undergoes meticulous scrutiny by my editor, David Imrie, whose invaluable input aids in refining the work. Subsequently, I distribute it to a panel of test readers for feedback. Lastly, I seek the expertise of my friend Andy Snow-Ellis for design and typographical considerations, as well as strategic oversight on marketing branding.
Much like photography, writing is akin to crafting an image; it's a collaborative effort involving various stakeholders. Just as models, locations, make-up artists, set builders, and art directors contribute to the success of a photograph, countless individuals have played crucial roles in bringing my books to fruition.
How does one become a test reader?
To become a test reader for my work, all you need is a passion for fantasy and a desire to contribute to the shaping of my stories. Test readers play a crucial role by providing feedback on what they enjoyed, what didn't quite resonate with them, and any surprises or disappointments they encountered while reading. Some of my most dedicated test readers are also my strongest supporters and advocates.
If you're interested in becoming a test reader, simply reach out to me. However, please keep in mind that being a test reader requires a commitment to providing feedback within a few weeks of receiving the material and spreading the word about it once it's published. If you're willing to take on this role, I'd love to hear from you!
